Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS), Burnihat, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, had been established in the year 1976 which was then named as State Forest Service College cum research Centre (SFSC & RC) with the primary objective of imparting professional training to the fresh ACF recruits from different states of the country to produce competent forest managers and also to conduct research work in forestry in bio-diversity rich North Eastern states of the Country.
Subsequently in September 1988 the then SFSC & RC was rechristened as State Forest Service College (SFSC) and further on 14.08.2009 the erstwhile SFSC has been again rechristened as Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS) by the Government of India. CASFOS Burnihat is one of the three Academics working under the Directorate of Forest Education, Dehradun who also controls all three CASFOS i.e. situated at Burnihat, Dehradun and Coimbatore besides Central Academy of Forest Education (earlier called as Eastern Forest Rangers College) Kurseong which is also under the same ministry in the Government of India.
As on date this Academy is the only Academy dealing with Forestry in the entire North East, imparting induction training to officers at the level of Assistant Conservator of Forests and Range Officers. This Academy have provided induction training to 568 ACF/SFS officers in 18 batches. The Academy started training of FROs from the year 2000 and since then 518 Range Officers in 19 batches have passed out from this Academy as on date.
