It gives me immense pleasure and a deep sense of responsibility to be associated with the Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS), Coimbatore, an institution with a rich legacy of imparting professional training to State Forest Service Officers. Since 1980, the Academy has a distinguished history spanning over four decades of imparting professional forestry training. During this period, 30 batches of State Forest Service Officers have been trained, comprising 1,056 Officer Trainees. The Academy has also conducted 14 batches of Forest Range Officer training, training 405 Officer Trainees. Over the years, the Academy has contributed significantly to strengthening the professional capabilities of officers entrusted with the management and conservation of the country’s forests and natural resources.

Forestry in India is a profession of immense responsibility and purpose. Forests are repositories of biodiversity, providers of vital ecosystem services and an important source of livelihood and sustenance for millions of people. The role of forestry has also evolved considerably with the emergence of contemporary challenges such as climate change, forest fires, biodiversity loss, habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict and increasing developmental pressures. Addressing these challenges requires a combination of scientific knowledge, field experience, sound administration and a deep understanding of the communities and landscapes associated with our forests.

In this changing environment, the role of a forest officer extends well beyond the conventional management of forests. It encompasses conservation of biodiversity, sustainable management of natural resources, protection of wildlife, community engagement, environmental stewardship and effective implementation of forest policies and laws. Professional training therefore assumes great significance in building a capable, responsive and future-ready forest service.

CASFOS provides a comprehensive learning environment that brings together classroom education, practical training, field tours, exposure visits and interaction with experts and practitioners from diverse disciplines. The Academy seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice and to provide an understanding of the scientific, technical, social, legal and administrative dimensions of forestry.

The strength of an institution such as CASFOS lies not only in its infrastructure and curriculum, but also in the collective experience of its faculty, resource persons, officers and trainees who contribute to a vibrant culture of learning and professional exchange. The Academy continues to evolve with the changing requirements of the forestry sector and remains committed to providing relevant and quality training for the State Forest Services. The Academy’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement has also been recognised through its 4-Star Accreditation by the National Standards for Civil Service Training Institutions (NSCSTI) under the Capacity Building Commission (CBC). CASFOS is the only forest training academy in the country to receive this rating.

It is my sincere hope that CASFOS will continue to serve as a centre of excellence in forestry training, fostering professionalism, scientific temper, leadership and a strong commitment to conservation and public service. The knowledge, values and professional relationships developed here will contribute to strengthening forest administration and, ultimately, to the sustainable management of our natural heritage.
