Burnihat --- About
The North Eastern
Region of India is an enchanting land of Blue Mountains & hills, green
valleys, plateaus & rivers. This region of our country is blessed with
vast forest resources. Rare species of flora & fauna are also available
here & as such this region is ideal for forestry research, education
& training.
The Govt. of India in the year 1976, established the first State Forest
Service College in the country at Burnihat so as to impart 1 1/2 years
professional forestry training to the State Forest Service Officers of our
country and also conduct short term refresher courses periodically. The
college comes under the Directorate of Forest Education, Ministry of
Environment & Forests, which has its headquarters in Dehradun.
The college is situated on the border of two states, Assam & Meghalaya
occupying both sides of national highway 40, popularly known as GS Road.
The college building, hostel, play ground & some staff quarters are
located in Kamrup District of Assam. There is a dispensary on the Assam
side. The doctor and staff are provided by the Assam Government and they
cater to the medicinal needs of the local public as well as the college
trainees and staff. Residential quarters for the faculty and clerical staff
etc. and post office are located in Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya. The
premier city of the North East i.e. Guwahati is only 25 Kms from Burnihat.
The historical name of Guwahati was Pragjyotishpur and it was the capital
of King Vir Bhagadutta during the period of ‘Mahabharata’. There are
regular bus services connecting Guwahati and Burnihat.
