Burnihat --- About

The North Eastern Region of India is an enchanting land of Blue Mountains & hills, green valleys, plateaus & rivers. This region of our country is blessed with vast forest resources. Rare species of flora & fauna are also available here & as such this region is ideal for forestry research, education & training.

The Govt. of India in the year 1976, established the first State Forest Service College in the country at Burnihat so as to impart 1 1/2 years professional forestry training to the State Forest Service Officers of our country and also conduct short term refresher courses periodically. The college comes under the Directorate of Forest Education, Ministry of Environment & Forests, which has its headquarters in Dehradun.

The college is situated on the border of two states, Assam & Meghalaya occupying both sides of national highway 40, popularly known as GS Road. The college building, hostel, play ground & some staff quarters are located in Kamrup District of Assam. There is a dispensary on the Assam side. The doctor and staff are provided by the Assam Government and they cater to the medicinal needs of the local public as well as the college trainees and staff. Residential quarters for the faculty and clerical staff etc. and post office are located in Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya. The premier city of the North East i.e. Guwahati is only 25 Kms from Burnihat. The historical name of Guwahati was Pragjyotishpur and it was the capital of King Vir Bhagadutta during the period of ‘Mahabharata’. There are regular bus services connecting Guwahati and Burnihat.
